Artist Profile - Grayson Malone - 3D Mixed Media

With a background in the arts, architecture, building, landscape, and furniture design, Grayson Malone leans towards geometric and simple forms. Her cast stone and concrete mixed media pieces are infused with atomized metals, found objects, up-cycled and re-cycled materials. She first became interested in concrete as a material because of its ability to mate with and absorb many other materials. In particular, metals. She wanted to see what would happen if she integrated very finely ground particulates of bronze, copper, iron or steel, directly into dry cement. After a few years of experimentation she refined the mixture into a hybrid of metal and concrete creating an interesting visual and physical marriage of the two materials. The appearance of her metal -infused concrete forms can best be described as bronzed metallic stone, as the atomized (finely powdered) metals co-combine with cement to form a completely separate, distinct medium. The result is a much harder compound able to be polished to a fine satiny gloss or honed to an eggshell matte finish.

Artist Profile - Jim Engelhardt - 3D Mixed Media

Jim Engelhardt creates unique and individual one of a kind tables, wine cabinets, display cases, and pedestals. Each piece is crafted from architectural elements he salvages from antique stores, flea markets and salvage yards.

The design of each creation is usually dictated by the architectural element he chooses, but may change as the work progresses. Sometimes he has a design in mind, then chooses the element that will most enhance the piece. Each of his creations is glued, nailed, and biscuit jointed for strength. He takes great care to ensure that no rust, weathered paint, moss, or weathered portions of wood are disturbed.

Artist Profile - Tuli Fisher - Blacksmith

Tuli Fisher is a full-time blacksmith in Bozeman, Montana. He graduated at Montana State University with degrees in Museum Studies and History. Since 1999 he's been forging hand tools and studying traditional tool making in various settings. His Iron & Wood Garden tools are based on functional, time-tested implements found in traditional agricultural communities. The weight and strength of each tool provides increased capability in working soil, while the hand turned handles provide sturdiness and comfort. Each tool is made of heavy-gauge wrought iron and is set into a walnut handle. While each tool is hot, it is riveted together and burned into the handle creating a long lasting gardening tool with no welds.

Fellow artists find Jennifer Phillips’ Stolen Artwork

Fellow artists find Jennifer Phillips’ Stolen Artwork

Two weeks ago, over $7,000 worth of original artwork was stolen from Jennifer Phillips car while it was parked at a Seattle Goodwill store. Jennifer had stopped at the store after making a delivery of her hand painted jewelry, to a local gallery. After returning to her vehicle, she noticed her window had been slashed – her laptop, iPhone, and personal items also were taken, but the jewelry was irreplaceable.

Jennifer Phillips is a Seattle based artist that will be showing her work at this weekend at Art in the Pearl. Her jewelry is unique in that she paints miniature oil paintings on the backs of Scrabble Tiles, using a magnifying glass. Hoping that this would help the public recognize them, Jennifer reached out to the local tv news stations for help in getting the community involved. Within no time, her story was featured on Komo 4 and Q13 Fox News.

Her persistence and proactivity paid off! This week she received a call from Komo 4 that a group of local artists – musicians, producers, and singers, who share a space at MIH Records in Seattle, had found her work at a bus stop right in front of their studio!

This group of good Samaritans really saved the day! It’s wonderful to be able to report a happy ending to what could have been such a devastating loss.

Art In The Pearl Artist Profile: Randall Roberts

Randall Roberts is one of the few remaining professional bromoilists. This craftsman era process (used around 1900) creates one of a kind images. The process takes three days - not including the time to actually take the photograph on film. Randall replaces the black and white photographic image with an oil paint using a hogsfoot shaped brush. The finished bromoil has an etching like quality yet retains much of the information from the original photograph. The bromoil may be grainy, impressionistic, silky, soft, or painterly - each one having its own distinctive look.

Randall's current body of work is primarily of the last of the wild mustangs living in a rugged mountain range in Montana. The mustang is the iconic symbol of America's independent spirit. Each bromoil of these wild horses tells a story of survival, freedom, and beauty.
